A TERENCE TAO MYSTERY

The Terence Tao Mystery is an engaging, hands on maths investigation that transforms students into mathematical detectives on a mission to solve a high profile crime. Before the investigation begins, students strengthen the productive learning dispositions needed for success by exploring how curiosity, persistence, flexible thinking, collaboration, and resilience help mathematicians solve complex problems. Once the case file is opened, students must work together to recover Terence Tao’s stolen work before the culprit escapes.

Throughout the workshop, students analyse clues, investigate timelines, interpret mathematical data, and solve a series of increasingly challenging problems to eliminate suspects and uncover the truth. As the investigation unfolds, they must identify patterns, apply logical reasoning, justify their thinking, and adapt their strategies as new evidence emerges. Every challenge encourages students to communicate effectively, collaborate with their team, and think like real mathematical investigators as they piece together the evidence.

By the end of the incursion, students will have strengthened their mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and critical thinking skills while experiencing the excitement of using mathematics to solve a realistic mystery. Every clue solved brings them one step closer to identifying the culprit, recovering Terence Tao’s stolen work, and closing the case.

PAYMENT INFORMATION

Price:

$45 + GST - Half day (3 hours)

$80 + GST - Full day (The choice of two half day, high ability incursions)

5% discount on bookings over 100 student that attend, confirmed with final invoice.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Year 3-8 students: Workshops runs as a 1.5 hour incursion with approximately 25 students.

Double classes with two presenters is also an option, approx 50 students.

A classroom/open learning space is required, along with access to a projector.

Student supervision by teachers is required throughout the session.
