Think Like a Mathematician

Think Like a Mathematician is an engaging, high-ability maths incursion designed to challenge students in Years 3–6 through rich problem-solving experiences that develop mathematical thinking, creativity, and strategic reasoning.

Throughout the workshop, students engage in a range of open-ended challenges, puzzles, and logic problems that require them to think flexibly, explore multiple approaches, and collaborate. Students are encouraged to look beyond simply finding an answer and instead focus on the strategies, patterns, and reasoning that lead to a solution.

Positive learning dispositions are embedded throughout the incursion, with a focus on helping students understand what it truly means to be “good” at maths. Students explore the importance of curiosity, perseverance, resilience, flexibility, and a willingness to embrace challenge. Through highly engaging tasks, students learn that mathematical success is not just about finding answers quickly, but about thinking deeply, asking questions, learning from mistakes, and developing effective strategies.

Through collaborative problem-solving tasks, students analyse patterns, tackle multi-step challenges, test different pathways, and refine their thinking as problems become increasingly complex. They practise making strategic decisions, recognising efficient approaches, communicating their reasoning, and learning from the ideas of others.

Designed specifically for students who enjoy being challenged, Think Like a Mathematician encourages students to see themselves as mathematicians and develop confidence in sitting with uncertainty, exploring possibilities, and persevering when they do not immediately know the answer.

By the end of the workshop, students will have developed a deeper understanding of themselves as mathematicians and the dispositions that support ongoing growth, confidence, and success in mathematics.

$45 + GST - Half day (2 - 2.5 hours)

$80 + GST - Full day (9am - 3pm The choice of two half day, high ability incursions for the same group)

5% discount on bookings over 100 student that attend, confirmed with final invoice.

INCURSION INFORMATION - HIGH ABILITY STUDENTS

Year 3-8 students: Workshops runs as a half day incursion with approximately 25 students.

Double classes with two presenters is also an option, approx 50 students.

A classroom/open learning space is required, along with access to a projector.

Student supervision by teachers is required throughout the session.
